I have used both styles and I prefer the century ones. Good choice. Less stress on the wrists from heavy hitters and can be used for kicks, too.

yeah the smaller ones suck especially when ppl make hard contact like you said, i've never tried to use the century ones for kicks too, but ill give it a shot when i pick these up. One of my buddies just doesnt know how to take it easy, hes got those focus mitts and my hands are on fire after he does a few combos. im going to get the blastbag for kicks too down the line, shit i got the room here and its a great stress reliever.

If I am seeing correctly from the pics the century ones are the style that rest along your fore arms and so the impact is spread out and your wrist doesn't get tweaked. The other ones are more like catchers mitts... I don't know what they were talking about being 'designed for an optimal wrist angle' in their ad... those ones always fucked with my wrists. But those Thai style pads are great for combos and even knees.

These ones look a bit sturdier, I would go for these... these are sexy:

I think that price should be for the pair, it would be gay if they charged separately. You should spring for those if you can manage it, the leather will last you twice as long as that 'pleather' vinyl shit.

yea it says Sold individually. so it'd be 120, so im gonna get the century ones, i found em for 25 bux, not sure shipping etc... but they will be good so i can have pads here at the crib. teach some of my friends how to strike, get them into holding pads so i can whale on em. If they go in 6 months ill feel like it was a mistake but i figure fuck it for 60 bucks, ill be able to practice punch/kick combos, i need some mats too, to practice some grappling.

Oh yeah. To have something just for your house those would be fine and probably last longer than six months.

I thought this was for a dojo, you would definitely want to go leather for that. I am not a fan of the vinyl shit, it tears and gets those ragged edges that cut you and the foam collapses and disintegrates in it. Also a lot of them are heat glued together rather than riveted.

To some extent duct tape will work if the vinyl splits. I think the main danger would be the loop for the hand coming off, you might be able to superglue that back on if it tears off. You should be fine, it should be a good piece of equipment for what you want and you can trade up for better shit in the future if you need sturdier stuff. It shouldn't tear open on you the first month or anything, and if it does you should have a case to return it...
