Default How many times should you be able to bench half of your bodyweight?

What would be the goal for:
a) a world-class athlete
b) a guy who wanted to get into shape


I asked this on another forum without getting very good responses, but it seems like you guys know your stuff, so I thought I'd give it a try here.

No but seriously, like 20 times.


I weigh 172, so you are asking how many times would I be able to bench 85 pounds. And I could bench it probably 40 times.

I can bench half my own weight 20 times easily, it's no problem at all.

Those numbers sound good. Can I ask whether you guys are professional athletes, amateur athletes or just guys trying to stay in shape and look great? It would help me put those totals into perspective.

i weigh like 199 on a great day or 210 on a terrible day so putting it at like 100 pounds, since i lift weights habitually i could probably bench press 100 pounds 8 million times.

6'1'' 225 So that would be 112 and a half. I could bench that a shit load of times. I should try it. I usually don't lift to see how many reps I can get with an easy weight though.

I can't imagine some of the numbers I'm hearing. I'm not saying you guys are lying*, but I don't think I've ever seen a guy--no mattter how big he was--doing even 500 or 1,000 reps on a bench press.

Yeah, honestly I don't think I could even press 25lbs 500 times.
