Things that make a big deferent’s between if they can classify us as independent contractors or not, and I know they have the right to cancel my contract for no reason at all… but what happened was not right and looks bad on their part. So I doubt they would want the story spread around out there and the IRS or newspapers looking into the situation.

The reason companies use independent contractors is so the don't have to pay benefits, they can let you go without cause, and they can let you go without having to pay unemployment. It's a common practice for companies that have seasonal needs for a larger workforce and wish to avoid paying fulltime employees when there is no work to be done, or alternately paying the expense of laying people off every year.
