Default California not zoning MMA gyms.

Today I met with some MMA gym owners that have been having problems expanding or opening MMA gyms in California. The cities are only allowing traditional martial arts not mma. When they go to get a permit the city ask what style of martial arts do you teach. If it is MMA they shoot it down. Could this be because the CSAC has the Deputy attorney General in charge of licenseing working for them. Because if you own a MMA gym and hold an event in your gym they have no jurisdiction. There is alot of various selective enforcement issues here.

If you charge admission it becomes an exhibition doesn't it?

Din Thomas was arrested for staging unsanctioned MMA fights in Florida. If I recall correctly, the charges were dropped after they authorities determined that it was "sparring." Maybe Relentless can fill us in on the details. . .

This is what happened, he was running smokers, there was head gear, gloves, all that good stuff, he was charging people at the door to come in, he had about 6 different cops there, off duty, but there were 2 undercover, now the thing is all the money he collected, went to the guys that were in there throwing down, Din is very very big on guys having at least 10 amateur fights before making their pro debut, and was giving these guys the opportunity to do it, and the guys that were in there were the ones that couldn't afford to pay for training at american top team

my brother was there when it went down, the cops were fucking awful to Din, he was trying to explain to them that he wasn't making money off of it that all the guys in there were making money for training and the cops were saying shit like "don't make excuses, don't make lies, no bullshit" it was ridiculous

Thanks for the explanation.
MMA is a regulated sport in California, so I don't see how you can hold a for-profit event there and claim the state has no jurisdiction.

Nevada is giving grants to UFC fighters/UFC affiliated clothing companies to open Gyms in nevada. Control the Gyms control the fighters.

My gym was having amateur fights (headgear, groves, shin guards, etc.) about a year ago. They did charge admission which I believe went only to the gym. During their second "fight night" the CSAC shut them down. They said that there is no sanctioning for amateur fights in Cali. So, they told everyone (over 400 people) that the fights were over. After most people left they let the last 5 fights go as sparring matches. No different than the first seven matches. It was such a weird thing. When asked when the CSAC would allow sanctioned amateur matches, they said they were working on it. They also said, get this, that sparring is technically an amateur match and you need an amateur liscense for it. The CSAC has their heads up their asses.
