This Might Be The Stupidest Thing Ive Ever Read On A Forum

The last person I would go and learn from is someone who is so savvy in "proving themselves" in competition. I would never go to BJ Penn and ask him to teach my JJ, I would never go to Machida and ask him to teach me Karate, I would never go to Tyson and ask him to teach me to box, I think you get the hint. The BEST trainers, and teachers out there are not the ones that prove themselves in competition. It's the ones that struggle with techniques, the ones that don't do so hot at competition, but understand every single aspect of their art. Good teachers aren't worried about proving themselves in competition, they're worried about helping their students be the best they can be.
I have a huge problem with instructors focusing on competition for themselves and would gladly continue that argument elsewhere.

I agree with him. The best trainers are not always the best fighters and vice versa.
Greg Jackson doesn't fight. Ganyo Fairtex doesn't fight.
Some guys, like Pat Militech can apparently do both but generally no. And it's because the guy with the best mind might not be the best athlete.
Point of fact: Jeff Curran, bad ass coach, middle tier fighter though.

I get your point miles...but to say you wouldnt learn jj from penn or karate from machida or wouldnt buy anything from xande or saulo....that is pretty fucking ignorant. Hes making a lame attempt to defend 10th planet JJ instructor brandon quick who was outed yesterday as a fake brown belt, and his shitty comp record

No, I agree. The best coaches are some of the worst fighters.
I could name a long ass list of coaches who are very successful coaches, but had a horrible record.
God_Of_MuayThai
There's no doubt that'd you'd learn a thing or two from those fighters, but you'd be better off learning from the guys that tought them. Fighters can only teach you things from their perspective. A legit coach sees things that they don't.
