Who are the legendary musical icons of our generation***
I copied this thread from Shitdog. I wanted to get the cameldog crew opinions. I mean it seems our generation lacks as far as musical icons go. I mean where are our Hendrix, Micheal jacksons, Elvis presleys!?
Anyways, ill start with Nirvana.

i don't consider Nirvana our generation, didn't last long enough, and that type of music completely died out
Tough to say honestly, no one really stands out in the main stream of music, Chili Peppers have a sound that is all their own

Back when musical icons were made. There wasn't all these genres of music for us to pick from.
Now you have all kind of different hip-hop, heavy metal, punk, country, rock, and pop music.
We are all broken up into different cultures and each culture has a certain icon. But there will never again be Icon like The Beatles or Elvis.

i think you would have to put Zeppelin into that catagory as well, first band that hit the mainstream that could really be considered "progressive", even though they were pretty much a blues band, i really gotta agree with Jar here, everything is a mess, back in the day there wasn't all different genre's of rock, now you have, emo, all different kinds of metal, punk, fag shit like Modest Mouse, etc.
i'd say the most recent icon would have to be whoever you consider started "punk", whether it be the Ramones, Sex Pistols, ya know?

If you guy buy biggest sellers of the last 15 years.
You would have to add Mariah Carey, Nsync, Back Street Boys, Britney Spears, and some other fuck twits that were big.
I am just not willing to label them musical icons.

When it comes to music. Marketing has become king. Whatever is on TV and radio long enough. Becomes what is huge.
Kids buy into whatever they are told. So you are seeing no talented fucks becomes icons.
Back in the day, the music was marketing. You wrote good shit, you were blasted by every kid in America.
Look at all teh rejects on American Idol

exactly, it's just gone down hill, whatever they show on TV, you have to like, it's fucking gay, fag ass bands like Franz Ferdinand and Modest Mouse, this shit is suppose to be like "indie" rock but how the fuck is it indie if it's on the mainstream?

There are still icons for those certain genres.
Nirvana started alternative IMO. Alternative is all we here now and days. No more classic rock, some metal. But mostly alternative shit.
Kanye west is gay, and sucks, but he is probably the biggest icon for hip hop right now. His beats arent matchesd and everyone seems to have shifted from the gangster style beats to Kanyes style.

you have era's of music, only now the eras only last 5 years and then evolve or change. 90-95 had grunge (alice in chains, soundgarden, pearl jam) 95-2000 rock/hip hop mix (korn, limp bizkit), 2000 to now has crap/new punk blink 182, fallout boy, etc.
I agree with red hot chili peppers because they were unique, same as beastie boys.

most bands in the last 15 years could never do mtv unplugged because they don't have the musical ability to carry an acoustic set. Maybe that's why they don't really do unplugged much anymore. I loved AIC, pearl jam, nirvana, and stevie ray vaughn in mtv unplugged. i try really hard to get into todays's music because I don't want to be that old guy stuck in the past but lady gaga and fallout boy don't do anything for me. Kings of Leon are pretty good.
