You guys are off by a couple thousand years. Pankration is what started mma. It was introduced in the Olympics in 648 BC. Pankration had striking standing and on the ground. It also had wrestling and chokes and joint locks. It was mma.

It wasn't a film. NHB and Pankration is not MMA. This movie I saw in 1973 and got me to do the first event where fighting went to submission. All styles employed. Not Brazilian NHB. If bruce had knew of brazilian Jiu Jitsu he would have used it and loved it. The Kempo Gloves were used and the UFC was also going to use them at first until the fighters complained that Royce wasn't going to use gloves because he wasn't going to punch. Everyone voted to not use gloves at the first UFC.

Wow sure the fuck isn't you. MMA
is not NHB or Pankration Which was boxing and wrestling with no rules. No submission in Pankration in greek times. Duh!
Although I love and respect the Master Bruce Lee, who was a real martial artist and NOT just an actor as many today seem to want to portrait him as (thanks to David Carradine RIP), it could be argued that "Blood Sport" had a more direct impact on modern MMA than Bruce's films did.
I liked the concept of all martial arts against one another from Blood sport. Though Bruce tried to show that in his films. Every floor was an opponent of another style. Bruce could not defeat them with one single style so he had to adapt and combine many styles to fit the situation. The basic principle of his Jeet Kune do.

Kazja, you are plain wrong here. The ancient Greeks used the same types of subs used in modern mma. They used chokes, arm bars, knee bars, pretty much everything we still use today.
In the year 393 A.D., the Roman Emperor Theodosius I issued an edict that outlawed all pagan festivals, including Pankration. There is evidence that Pankration continued in some shape or form until the sixth century, though in an underground setting. Traces of Pankration could be found in some parts of Greece and Turkey until its revival this past century.

Good point.
The only argument in favor of Blood Sport really is that it was more contemporary than Bruce's films and the concept of all martial arts against one another is a little more evident in this movie than in Bruce's file.
