I think it's rumor, like much of what floats around Sherdog and MMa blogs.
If no real source can be linked to Tom Atencio saying it, it's rumor .. I know he's repeated many times they're in in to profit and have 3 shows planned, but never did he say the quote you attributed.
No businessman would publicly say such a thing , and infer their first show wasn't up to par and their mext might be their last.
That's a no-no and demoralizer to the fighters and staff, and no way Tom said that.

well it was a direct quote from him, from what i remember, he said he's not planning 4-5 events ahead like the UFC does because he doesn't have the money to do that right now, he's going to take it one event at a time, which is the smart thing to do, but he's not in it to lose money

UFC 90: OCTOBER 25, 2008 IN ILLINOIS
venue: Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois
-Anderson Silva (#1 Middleweight in the world)* vs. Patrick Cote
-Thiago Alves (#3 Welterweight in the World)* vs. Diego Sanchez (#8 Welterweight in the World)*
-Tyson Griffin vs. Sean Sherk
-Spencer Fisher vs. Melvin Guillard
-Gleison Tibau vs. Hermes Franca
|
Hell yes.#1 or 1a fighter in the world depending on who you talk to. A great welterweight fight that will likely be for a title shot if Alves wins he will have defeated Karo/Hughes/Diego in a row. Tyson Griffin getting the biggest test of his young career outside of the Uriah Faber fight. Fisher/Guillard is going to be a fucking slugfest. Tibau/Franca should be great as well. I wish we could see fighters more often too but hell most of these guys want 2-3 months for a camp because these fights are so huge. That only leaves times for 3 fights a year 4 if you're lucky.

Affliction are not going to last very long. They lost a fortune on the first card and probably will on this next one too.
That could well be it for them I think.

Hate to repeat myself here , but how do YOU know they "lost a fortune."
Sure, it's probable they did lose some money.
Unless anyone is an accountant for Affliction or is Tom Atencio, noone can judge the financial side of Affliction Entertainment.
What about apparel sales ? Did you factor that in ?
But 'a fortune.' ?
Not likely.

They needed 250-300,000 PPV buys to break even supposedly. They are saying they made 100,000 buys but the real figure is somewhere around 60,000 I believe. That's a huge shortfall. Do the maths, $40 x 200,000 is $8 million.

There's a lot more revenue streams than PPV, though PPV can be the most lucrative.
Why would the real figure be 60,000 ?
Is this based on some vague report by Meltzer ?
Atencio stated they did "well over 100,000 PPVs".
I'm going to take him at his word there.
What about sales of Affliction shirts and clothing, and the obvious boost in sales that resulted from the Affliciton banned event.
Sponsors like Buckle ?
In business, you need to spend money to make money.
Like a start-up needing to rent an office, pay employees etc
Affliction DID lose some money, but not "a fortune" as you believe, but in the LONG RUN it's the right strategy - building brand recognition, keeping losses managable.
That's what investing is about - they certainly did not lose that much money.
Why would they be announcing and reserving a follow-up event so quick .....

So if they didn't lose a lot why were they trying to get some of the fighters to take a 50% pay cut for this second card? If they did well over 100,000 buys then they'd be officially publishing the numbers not keeping them a secret.

Atencio said they did over 100,000, but he won't reveal the true number, everything i've seen says it did under 100,000, but it's smart by Atencio not to reveal the real numbers, because if they are in financial crisis it's best not to reveal it to the UFC...it more than likely they lost a shit load of money, their pay was what 3.3 million? 40% of PPV buys go to the PPV distrubitors, there's no way they came even close to breaking even

According to Dave Meltzer, the new estimates have the 7/19 Affliction Banned PPV doing between 90,000 to 100,000 buys.

Looks better but seriously how many people do you think buy those overpriced t shirts? Most of them don't even look remotely decent anymore and if you have $60 to be dropping on a flipping t shirt...damn

Is this 50% thing also a rumor ?
Can you provide a source where Atencio says so or it's another rumor, like how Fedor was supposed to be injured before the Sylvia fight etc
They probably want that for certain LOSING fighters .. like Tim Sylvia.
Why pay more when you can save money ?
I'm certain they didn't lose as much as you(or Affliction haters, not saying you're one,) imagine.
Can you give a figure on how much they lost ?
You can't, because all this stuff is just rumors on Sherdog and mma blogs.
I have a very business-like mind, so I'm very diligent in asking for every source and scrutinizing it, looking at the whole picture and studying revenue streams, rather than simply reading rumors/gossip which aren't based on reality.

I don't like the skull/wing designs, they suck, but like some of the Heroes and Demons Series ... if there were tees of similar design and lower price, i'D BUY em.
I like my Affliction tees though !
It looks best on muscular people imo
