Is fasting beneficial?
You hear people talk about "detoxing" your system and I don't understand that. I'm not drunk and I don't need to be "detoxed". I'm sure there's all type of chemicals and shit in our food that we don't know about, but does fasting get rid of that? How long should someone fast if they are going to fast?

I have never gotten into it, but check this out. This is a good start if you are interested.

Only suggestion is make sure to get sleep and lay off the energy drinks if you decide to do it.

Read the article and look it up. Very interesting and scientific studies kind of prove the benefits of it.

I always thought fasting was kinda silly, mostly because I'm not religious.

I swear I wasn't thinking of Rampage when I made this thread. This thread is about whether or not there are health benefits to fasting(not about spiritual benefits).
Thanks for the article jar. It looks interesting.
Here is a snippet from the wikipedia article on fasting:
|
Recent studies on mice show that fasting every other day while eating double the normal amount of food on non-fasting days led to improved insulin and blood sugar control, neuronal resistance to injury, and health indicators superior to mice on 40% calorie restricted diets.[11][12] Alternate day calorie restriction may prolong lifespan[13] and attenuate diseases associated with inflammation, oxidative stress and aging[14].

i think fasting one day a week can have some benefits. but while training hard, i have to keep eating on the off days especially, to replenish everything. fasting on liquid nutrition might be helpful in terms of resting your digestive system. I've never been one to fast....it's just a little new-agey to me.
btw, what's the deal with "toxins"? i'm not sure what these hippies mean when they use that word, but i'm thinking it has to do with some by-products or heavy metals in your system. does anyone know what is meant by "toxin?" and could you be specific please?

kenny florian recommends fasting 1 day a week of just water and juice....but then i thought about the juice part...it has carbs and shit...i would just use water....I cant remember which fighter said this but he says he drinks alot of water before he cuts the water weight because its easier to cut the excess water and then your normal water weight comes out easier...dont know how true that is but it kinda makes sense

The two most common fasting methods used are juice fasting and water fasting - this is apart from religious based fasting.
In Ramadan, it's for one month, and fasts are from sunrise to sunset, every day, for a lunar month.
Thus, it's not a full-day fast, as everyone eats alot everyday, thus, in my opinion, nullifying any health benefits.
The juice fast is reccommened for 2-3 days, you simply drink non-citrus juices like grape, carrot, etc every 3 hours.
There is also water fast, where you just drink water, this would be recommended one day.

fasting is stupid. just eat everyday like a normal human. It doesnt feel good to be starving, so I wouldnt think there are benefits for starving yourself worth more then the benefits of just eating like a normal creature. Eat, workout and you will be fine.

Do you fast during Ramadan? You don't seem like the observant type.
Anyway, how often for health reasons do you fast? Do you believe in the detoxing stuff, or do you do it for metabolic or digestive reasons?
